About the Book

This book is structured along the main aspects of social change work—purpose, philosophy, principles, power, polarity, culture, social movements, and practices.

The purpose of human life is the evolution of consciousness. Making this purpose the context and driving force for social change would help social change agents understand what the ultimate societal goal is and shape the design of social change efforts towards it.

Philosophy is often unnamed in social change work; it works implicitly, thereby recreating the conditions that cause social challenges. Both spiritual texts and emerging science reveal that the nature of reality is wholeness, a concept that revolutionized physics promulgated by David Bohm, who argued that all social problems are the result of fragmentary thinking and could only be solved through an approach of wholeness.

Most social change work is anchored on shared principles. The problem is that each organization has its own set and there is not a general, shared set of principles for social change work. This leads to fragmentation of the work, or an inability for the work to add up to something bigger on a societal level. There are three cosmic principles that are a starting point for transformational, that is evolutionary, social change; perhaps they are all we need.

The key power lever for social change now is consciousness. Therefore, social movements should factor in consciousness, at the personal and collective levels. The goal is a higher consciousness human. The role of social change agents is to offer models of the higher consciousness human.

The main challenge in social change now is polarity. Polarity is not only widespread in the field; it is also a main challenge within social change organizations, often paralyzing or destroying them. There is a way of looking at polarity that can help move social change agents move beyond simply playing out one of the poles to co-creating higher level realities.

A new model for organizational culture that addresses these challenges is the culture of grace. There are three concepts that support the development of a culture of grace for social change organizations.

Since evolution of consciousness depends on love, and love depends on unitive perception (the ability to see the underlying wholeness or oneness), social movements need to have a unitive approach.

Finally, there a set of organizational practices based on all of the aforementioned concepts that makes the proposed theory practical.
